Just spoke about LANCE'S dog carrier---Everyone has a dog carrier on their sled or some means of carrying an injured, tired or sick dog. DOGS are the priority--they ARE the athletics!!
When you come into UNALAKLEET --HI BRET and DAVIDA HANSON (owners of PEACE ON EARTH) hope to see you next year--  you will notice an array of handmade parkas ,or parky's as they call them. Making a parky is a very traditional form of INUPIAQ art. They are made with beautiful printed fabrics or sometimes sturdy corduroy. They are well insulated and usually have a rim of fur showing around the bottom. They can be trimmed with rickrack or piping to set off the pockets and sometimes a zipper. The ruff can be quite elaborate, functional and beautiful. The sunshine ruff is appropriately named as it looks like the rays of sun. Its main purpose is to shelter the face and it is amazingly effective. I learned this at the Univ. of Alaska. My first year it was -70!! They had the school all "tunneled" so you didn't have to go outside. If you did go out they said to breath thru the ruff of fur on your hood so you wouldn't freeze your lungs. The cars had to be plugged in at the parking meters or they wouldn't start and the tires can easily go flat in this kind of cold. I never saw that kind of temperature again!! I was young, so who minded!!!!!!@@#
