MARCH 12th cont'd

A villager in UNALAKLEET waiting for the first musher to come in
Yesterday it was a clear day in UNALAKLEET but NOT today. It is very foggy. This picture
shows what happens when the fog freezes in the air and then settles on sleds, grasses, trees etc you have what you see above, HOAR FROST. You see all the sleds here as many of the
mushers will change them at this point.  Its colorful and beautiful but NOT for mushers.

UNALAKLEET has a population of 900, the largest community between Fairbanks and Nome on this Iditarod trail. The town has erected 6 wind charges high on the hill outside town. As the wind
always blows here, the investment paid off as the community saves roughly 80,000 gal. of diesel
fuel in generating electricity on an annual basis.
When the mushers come in, the town will be out to greet them. Here is where you will see many of
the natives in their colorfully made winter attire.
