DAY 8 of the IDITAROD:
A note to get you started on the day:
If anyone is interested in buying an Alaska State Ferry and can find $1.5 MILLION its all yours.
JUST A THOUGHT
BACK TO THE RACE:
DALLAS SEAVEY said the race really starts at KALTAG. So now for some strategizing:
MITCH SEAVEY is just running at the top of his game and is the first one out of KALTAG
DALLAS SEAVEY is changing sleds. He has been running his "big black bus" as he calls it.
He carries dogs resting them and switching them on and off. NOW he knows
which dogs are the tough, fast and hearty ones and he will only run those, not
carry any. The big sled was difficult to stear and exhausting for him--
it was a heavy load. With the sleaker sled its lighter and he can shift his
weight to stear. Much easier on him. He is now out of KALTAG and behind
his Dad, MITCH.
WADE MARRS is resting in KALTAG but leaving soon
NICOLAS PETIT is leaving KALTAG
JOAR ULSOM also leaving KALTAG
85 mile trip from KALTAG to UNALAKLEET. UNALAKLEET is where Hank and I stayed
for some time watching the dogs come in. I believe it was the year JOHN BAKER won.
It was great here. One place to eat--pizza place where we stayed and ate. Also got to eat whale
blubber--different and certainly an acquired taste
ALIY ZIRKLE leads her dogs in KALTAG
MITCH SEAVEY 1st into KALTAG
this pic should come after JOHN BAKER gets in: 12 yr old fm KALTAG helping JOHN BAKER
JOHN BAKER runs up the YUKON riverbank into KALTAG
RYAN ANDERSON (r)scratched at GALENA after he had completed both is 8 and 24 hr layover.
reason was due to the best interest of his race time. He was running with 10 dogs.
SMOKE the dog of SCOTT SMITH died unexpectedly during air transit from GALENA to
ANCHORAGE. He was dropped due to a wrist injury. The findings were hyperthermia.
They are now looking at the warmer temp on board the plane---will that have anything to do
with his death.
