MARCH 4, 2022 DAY BEFORE THE START OF THE IDITAROD 2022

 March 4, 2022

Getting ready for the ceremonial start of the 50th IDITAROD --2022!!!! IN ANCHORAGE,ALASKAWeather prediction for the start of the race is a bit balmy. Snow forecast for today and 24 degrees tonight. 34 degrees tomorrow and possible snow. At that temperature doesn't look promising for possible rain!!

I am still trying to determine if our Dr. Gerhart, a Vet from Pleasant Valley is working at this race. I know she did the initial program for training  but don't know what happened after that. This is a volunteer job.

This is the 50th running of the Iditarod. The mushers start order takes place in a virtual drawing (they are still implementing many COVID 19 protocols for the safety of the teams, volunteers and communities where the race travels).

There are 17 women, 32 men, 13 rookies, 36 veterans from 5 different countries and 5 former champs.

The start of the race is in Anchorage at 10am (AST) and 2pm (EST) running for 5 hours.

NEWS: NIC PETIT musher, has tested positive for COVID so he is out of the race. JEFF KING has stepped up to run his dogs for him. JEFF wasn't going to race this year but things can change!!!NIC said he was successful dodging moose but not COVID!!

As this is an even year they will run the southern route. Its the same route until OPHIR 450 miles into the race, then northern route goes north and you figured out the rest!!

Few of the mushers you may remember---The Barrington twins will run again BUT ANNA is bib #9 and her twin KRISTY is #24. They usually run together so we'll see how this goes.

DALLAS SEAVEY has won 5 times and was out last year. Glad to see him back. His bib is #20. His Dad, an all time winner MITCH SEAVEY will be bib #30 and my friend and favorite winner, MARTIN BUSER, will be bib #38. A rookie this year from Chazey-Bons, France is SEBASTIAN DOS SANTOS BORGES (whew!).So happy to see HUGH NEFF #50 back in. He brings the "Cat in the Hat" theme to the communities with lots of fun included. He did come to Poughkeepsie, several years ago ,to talk with a class of elementary school kids.

The TEACHER ON THE TRAIL this year is JIM DEPREZ, a third-grade teacher at Ridgewood Elementary School in New Jersey.

See you tomorrow at 2pm for the start.💓
