Here is CASEY FAGERQUIST, from Anchorage, riding his fat bike in competition along the IDITAROD TRAIL. This is a race they do every year. They are not on the trails when the mushers are there. I believe they go before them.
FYI: This is a very expensive race for each musher. They get help from their sponsors, a very important aspect for them. Figuring vet expenses, equipment, dog food, race fees, booties etc. Booties are part of the required gear and are usually changed at each checkpoint if needed. That makes approximately 1,200 booties used and each one is $1. Total cost approx. $15,000 - $18,000 and thats plus lost wages as they are out training not working at their regular jobs.
Someone gave an excellent discription of a race dog--basically a 2 year old in the body of an Olympic Athlete.
They are now on their way from NIKOLAI to MCGRATH approx 48 miles. Here are some photo's of what they will find in MCGRATH. The first picture is the place Hank and I stayed at while in MCGRATH with moose wandering around the front door!!Last picture of the trail breakers ready to clear and mark the way into MCGRATH.
Uh on, all caught up on the blog
