MARCH 5, 2023. FIRST RACE DAY!! Only took about one hour to get all 34 mushers on their way.Quick as there are so few mushers. ALASKA is 3 hours difference from EST (back)
WILLOW is 19 degrees with sun, no precipitation or wind. FYI The marathon is 26.2 miles, this race is 998 miles--pretty close to the length of 39 marathons.
They predict a fast trail this year. We'll see.
BRIDGETT WATKINS #19 from Fairbanks ran the race last year but didn't finish. Getting near to the end she ran into incredible weather that is a story in itself (check last years blog). The wind, in the wind tunnel was unbearable. She was injured, think she broke her arm. She was unable to finish the race SO this year she vows to finish. She is a nurse and I wonder if thats some of the reason for wearing a helmet. They did discuss helmets last year after an accident ALIY ZIRKLE and BRIDGETT had. Seems like a good idea. I think perhaps I'd wear a suit of armor!!! She is the daughter of ALLEN MOORE a musher and step daughter of ALIY ZIRKLE a crowd favorite musher
now retired.
JESSIE ROYER #26 is also a crowd favorite. Her best race was coming in 3rd. Lets hope she can do even better this year. GO JESSIE!!! Hank and I had lunch with her in NOME a few years back. Fun and full of energy.
Ok lets see about those pictures. I'll get it, hopefully before the end of the race.
I'll try to get video's if possible. I will keep you up to date on the standings and any race details.
