Day #2 MARCH 6, 2023
Teams will be in FINGER LAKE, RAINY PASS and one on to ROHN today.
As of 10 pm EST the standing (top 5) are:
NIC PETIT, JESSIE HOLMS,BRENT SASS,RICHIE DIEHL and KELLY MAIXNER.
NIC is the only one in ROHN. The other 4 and 20 more are resting in RAINY PASS. By tomorrow morning all teams should have passed RAINY PASS and on to ROHN.
It is 27 degrees in RAINY PASS with a touch of precipitation and winds only 2mph. It is said the snow is "soft" This is not good for the dogs. Difficult to run in. One of RYAN REDINGTON's dogs has a "sore" leg probably due to this soft snow and another dog has a sore shoulder. He had to drop those dogs at FINGER LAKE. Those dogs are then taken by plane to Anchorage--the Millennium Hotel --where they are cared for by VETS until the owners come for them.
GREGG VITELLO and BAILEY VITELLO are Father/Son. Apparently, GREGG got on the wrong trail but was helped by other mushers that were behind him. No details yet.
NIC PETIT is in the lead but others have said he doesn't seem to have any "spark". Hope being in front can change that.
My daughter, TARA, has asked about the TEACHER ON TRAIL with the possibility of introducing this to her sons classroom.
Applications for TEACHER ON THE TRAIL are reviewed and selected the previous year giving time to help prepare the chosen Teacher for her IDITAROD experience. This year JULI WESTRICH was chosen. She is a teacher from a suburb of ROCHESTER, NY. She helps teachers, from all over the world, design programs for their classroom. There are video's, educational pieces with questions for the kids. JULI will travel with the IDITAROD teams, interview them and show these to the classrooms. These are just a very few of what is offered in this program. It seems like it is fun, exciting learning and can be very creative. You are one on one with JULI. If you are interested, I would be happy to give you information on where to delve further. * One of JULI's first "jobs" was to give out TRAILMAIL to each Musher in WILLOW. TrailMail is part of their essential gear that they carry to NOME. It is then postmarked and returned to the original sender. I will follow this with photo's.
