DAY #1 ANCHORAGE - WELCOME TO THE 2025 IDITAROD!!
There has been a change in theTRADITIONAL START of the race from WILLOW, ALASKA to FAIRBANKS, ALASKA ending in NOME. This is due to the lack of snow in some of the areas of the Alaska Range. This problem with lack of snow has only happened 4 times in race history. The last time was in 2017.
The mushers now have to adjust to a new mindset, due to the change.They will alter their strategies and recalculate distances between check points. Now they will not be going through the famed and technically challenging Alaska Range--well known for areas like the "burn". They feel they will come out, with this new route, a little physically healthier as mushers and the sleds will have a little less beating. They will spend a longer time traveling thru Interior Alaska on the frozen Yukon River. They do find that a bit boring so they have uploaded some good tunes.
The CEREMONIAL START will begin, as usual, in ANCHORAGE-- TODAY and the OFFICIAL START in FAIRBANKS will start on MARCH 3rd MONDAY at 11 am (Alaska time). The BANQUET will be in NOME on March 16th. I will provide a map of the route as soon as they provide one.
The photo above shows the love the musher has for his/her dogs and the love received from the dogs.It really is heartwarming.
